Submissions for Weiwuying International Music Festival Work Selection and Composer Selection Contests Open to Public as Chance to Work with World-class Composer
Weiwuying is looking for up-and-coming artists to submit compositions for the 2023 and 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festivals. Selected pieces will be performed at Weiwuying, and selected composers will receive guidance from world-class composer Unsuk CHIN. The event looks to encourage exchange among Taiwanese artists and the international community and give Taiwan's creative energy a chance to shine on the world stage.
Weiwuying began inviting people to submit musical compositions in 2019 to promote exchange between Taiwanese composers and the world while nurturing local musicians. In April of this year, world-renowned Korean composer Unsuk CHIN took on the role of artistic director for the Weiwuying International Music Festival, creating a platform aimed at discovery and innovation that will serve to carry on and develop musicians, performers, and creators from various generations and cultures. Anyone in the Taiwanese public is invited to submit their own musical works, of which four will be chosen as winners. For the 2023 Work Selection and 2024 Composer Selection (both of which are part of the Weiwuying International Music Festival), two performances and two composers will be chosen, respectively, for which they will be awarded prize money and venues to show their work at the 2023 and 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festivals. The winning composers will do a workshop with CHIN and then create music commissioned by Weiwuying. Submissions will be accepted until Sunday, December 4, from anyone who is a Taiwan national or a legal resident and is under the age of 40.
Submissions for the 2023 Work Selection must be original creations by the applicants for an orchestra of five to 20 members. Each winning submission will be awarded NT$50,000 (taxable) as both prize money and a license fee for performances. Selected pieces will be performed by the Weiwuying Contemporary Music Ensemble under the baton of Clement POWER at Weiwuying's Recital Hall on April 19 and 20, 2023, during the Weiwuying International Music Festival.
Applicants for the 2024 Composer Selection must submit two musical scores. There are no restrictions on instrumentation, length, or whether the piece has already been publicly released. Attention will be given to pieces that express individual style and demonstrate technical skill. The winners will be commissioned by Weiwuying to create scores under the guidance of CHIN, which will be performed at the 2024 Weiwuying International Music Festival. This opportunity is meant to stimulate creative energy among Taiwan's composers and allow them to shine on the international stage. CHIN will judge the submissions, and the winners will be announced on Thursday, January 12, 2023.
