2024【Explore the Pipe Organ】July- December
Besides the breathtaking vineyard-style seating and outstanding acoustics at the Weiwuying Concert Hall, the pipe organ, located on the top floor, is another major highlight. If you're wondering what this largest organ in Asia can do, our Explore the Pipe Organ series of events is just what you're looking for!
Performances will be enhanced with other instruments, special lighting effects, and informative explanations, which will make the organ's diversity and charm more accessible and understandable to the audience.
In addition, the programs boast two unique features: The first is that they will be Close-up Shows—the stage will be transformed into a seating area to give the audience an even closer experience with the organ. The second is the Musical Chairs aspect: members of the audience will be permitted to get up and move to other seats between pieces of music to try out different perspectives and get an idea of which seats they would like to reserve for future performances.
So for an hour each month, come to our Explore the Pipe Organ events to see all the secrets behind this fascinating instrument!
Programs
7/17(三)14:30-15:30 【The Courageous Adventure with Lulu】
Not sure how to explain a pipe organ to your child? Leave it to children's favorite Lulu! In July, Weiwuying opens its doors to welcome children to the concert hall with lulu leading the way. Organist YU Hsiao-yi will bring us a show that is perfect for families. From the hopeful, vigorous Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals to the organ-trumpet duets, the audience will be treated to a diverse array of music, such as The Prince of Denmark’s March, commonly heard at weddings – including that of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Finally, we will hear the classic Military March No. 1 by SCHUBERT, which is often played at award ceremonies. This summer, bring your children to the concert hall to experience the charm of the pipe organ for the first time! |
8/21(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Kid’s Crazy Party】 ※Close-up Show
It’s summer break, so what are you going to do? How about bringing your kids to Weiwuying for a bit of the organ? Come hear the beautiful melodies from BACH’s serene Baroque music and MOZART’s Rondo Alla Turca to GERSHWIN’s exciting jazz, all performed on just the organ in an exhibit of 400 years of Western music history. And there will be an added surprise: BACH’s famous Toccata in d minor will be played in tandem with the theme song from the cartoon Detective Conan. Upon hearing British composer ELGAR’s Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, kids might realize that this is the song at the end of the cartoon Atashin'chi, though morphed into jazz format. Also, as it is a Close-up Show, people can come onto the stage to see firsthand how an organist’s fingers and feet fly and experience an augmented brilliance of the “king of musical instruments.”
9/18(Wed)14:30-15:30 【Fly Me to the Moon】 ※Close-up Show
Families come together on the full moon, and adding music only makes it better! The organist has selected and rearranged famous pieces related to the moon, such as Moon River, hummed by silver screen star Audrey HEPBURN during her performance in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, GERSHWIN’s brisk Come to the Moon, Impressionist DEBUSSY’s tender masterpiece Clair de Lune, and the famous Mandarin classic The Moon Represents My Heart. Played by the organ, you’ll hear these pieces as you’ve never heard them before, and since it’s a Close-up Show, you’ll have an unforgettable experience of warmth to share with everyone else on stage.
10/23(三)14:30-15:30 【Knock! Knock! Music or Trick!】 ※Close-up Show
If you say you’ve never heard organ music, then you must never have been to a Halloween party! Interestingly, the dignified air of the organ, usually played in church, has often been used to write pieces with an air of mystery and even horror. This concert opens with the most classic of melodies from The Phantom of the Opera, whose music foreshadows the arrival of the ghostly guest at a Paris opera house. BACH’s Toccata and Fugue in d minor gives you the feeling a vampire is making an entrance. Accompanied by Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, a depiction of dancing ghouls, this performance is sure to be spectacular! The concert wraps up with two pieces from the 20th century, An Elf on a Moonbeam and Suite Gothique. Come for this Close-up Show to hear the refined handling of organ timbre.
11/21(三)14:30-15:30 【Organ Masterpieces and Taiwan Soundscape】 ※Musical Chairs
The organ has beenis a mustan essential part inof European churches and equally important for Christmas songs. For this concert, three organists have chosen brilliant pieces of praise for the birth of Jesus from various times in history. Each piece will surprise you because you will experience not only the unimaginable power of the organ but also its capacity for gentleness, inspiring you to quietly sing along. Accompanying the organ will be handchimes and a piano, exhibiting the synergy of the organ with other instruments while emanating that warm feeling of Christmas togetherness. So as the year comes to an end, instead of just getting together for a meal, come to Weiwuying to give your ears a feast too!
